That was REALLY bad. Painful to watch, actually.

Joey Lawrence has drag queen eyebrows
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 30, 2020 11:41 PM |
Micharel Stolyanov was never hot.
He was on the show simply because he had a big nose, and it would have seemed ridiculous if Mayim "The Great Schnozzola" Bialik had only ONE brother and he had Joey Lawrence's little button-nose.
This way, they could plausibly imply Bialik and Stolyanov inherited their noses from Ted Wass's side of the family and that Lawrence inherited his little nose from their mother's side (and eventually they did have someone with a small nose play the mother--Melissa Manchester!).

I thought the drug addict brother was hot but damn he looks like a skeezy Eastern Europe now
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 31, 2020 12:01 AM |
What's sad about Michael Stolyanov is that he at least had such great hair when the series was on, and now he has completely lost that--his hair now looks stringy and greasy. And his skin looks blotchy.
Has he had a drug problem?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 31, 2020 12:05 AM |
Poor Michael Stolyanov looks like he's been sharing the same drug-pipe with Macaulay Culkin.

[quote] Why would they have her dance?!
Mayim Bialik, as has been noted many times, was not a pretty girl. However, she was extremely talented (she was a good belter as well as a good dancer as a child, and a good comedic actor--note her performance in "Beaches"), and NBC was convinced (rightly) they could build a whole TV show around her that would be popular with young people.
To work against her plainness (and the inevitable complaints that would arise from it), they decided her character would be extremely fun and enegretic and also an extremely stylish and fun clothes horse. So the purpose of the opening credits sequence was to show she was extremely energetic (hence all the different kids oif dancing, showing off her gymnastic abilities) and wore lots of different outfits that then were considered kicky and stylish.
However, as the very funny Melanie Hutsell SNL parody of the credit sequence at r2 shows, Mayim Bialik was still a plain girl no matter how she dressed or how maniacally she danced, so it seemed like they were glorifying this extremely plain young woman. And because Bialik was insecure about her looks, her aggressive stage mother insisted the screenwriters work in many references to the character's supposed beauty--thus creating the "Oh Blossom, you're so beautiful" line her boyfriend Vinnie frequently delivered, which has been mocked for years on Datalounge.
Bialik grew up to be no raving beauty, but she is at least much more pleasing looking as an adult than as a child. And she still has superb comic timing, as she showed regularly on "The Big Bang Theory." she has incidentally made fun of that intro, and she rolled her eyes and guffawed when a morning TV anchor asked for her to dance and Joey Lawrence to say "Whoa!" when they appeared together to publicize the first issuance of the series on DVD.

R33 is the first time I really do think that a celebrity is posting in her own thread.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 31, 2020 2:25 AM |
I doubt that's Mayim but if it is HI! I never really watched Blossom - I was in college when it was on so it wasn't on my radar. But I loved Bialik in Beaches and I thought she was a great addition to Big Bang Theory. I thought I remembered reading that she was jealous of Joey Lawrence's popularity during the show's run and that they didn't really get along well. Anyone else remember that?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 31, 2020 2:45 AM |
[quote]Why would they have her dance?!
Because it was a show for eight year old girls. Are you an eight year old girl?

Even today, Mayim would never have posted this sentence of mine:

Blossom wasn't a bad show at all. There was a good episode in which Joey finds out his teammate from the baseball team is gay and had crush on him. The storyline was handled quite well for a sitcom.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 31, 2020 5:12 AM |
I'm Lawrence's age but when the show was on I found Stoyanov and even the Dad far sexier and cuter than him.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 31, 2020 5:47 AM |
Interesting post R33, thank you. I admit it did seem like they were making fun of her, but this show was on before my time so I didn't know much about her/the show
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 31, 2020 6:14 AM |
The show wasn't bad at all. And why do some people get upset that the star wasn't "hawt"? The show was about the struggles of adolescent girls; shouldn't the lead actress be relatable?
At the height of the Me Too movement, Bialik wrote an essay that described the other side of the sexist douchebaggery coin: men who act shitty towards women they don't want to fuck. She talked about reading the reviews of the Blossom pilot episode; a TV guide writer had actually written a sentence dedicated to criticizing the shape of her face (he compared it to a "shield"). At the time, she was 14.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 31, 2020 8:28 AM |
R44 people get upset when the star isn't hot because television is a visual medium. It's unfair when that critique is only directed at one group (women) while men get a free pass. Datalounge is one of the few places where the criticism is neutral, so to speak

For as smoking hot as he was at this time, Joey Lawrence did very few shirtless scenes or photo shoots. I don't think he had one shirtless scene the entire run of the show. Obviously he worked his ass off in the gym to get that body, why not show it off?
Then, flash forward 15 years later and he did that gross shirtless workout in the park for the paps, ridiculously over-tanned and manscaped with the shaved head. What a waste.

The fat/homely girl is always fun and funny and loyal.
Real-life Mayim is intelligent but has some offbeat ideas about child-rearing. I think she’s also some kind of Orthodox Jew. As, I believe, Mara Hobel was.
Anyway, I find her somewhat likable.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | October 31, 2020 6:53 PM |
I feel sorry for Joey Lawrence because his most memorable character he's ever played had stupid clothes, and the stupidest catch phrase ever ("WHOAAAH!").
One of the striking things about the show, though, was that when Blossom started having sex with Vinnie, she went to Joey for advice because it was just assumed Joey's character (who was only about fifteen) had already had lots of sex.
